Discover Recycap's journey from a Madrid coffee chat to a sustainable tech startup.

Ever had one of those conversations that changed everything? That’s what happened to Bassam, Vicente, and Eduardo, the trio behind Recycap Technologies. Brewing over a cuppa in a Madrid basement (because, well, Spain!), their conversation sparked an idea: how to make coffee consumption more sustainable.

Their backgrounds are as diverse as the regions bordering the Mediterranean. There’s Bassam Damaj, a world-renowned immunologist and clinical oncologist with a surprising twist – he’s not even a coffee drinker! But his passion for environmental responsibility is undeniable.  His impressive career spans over 20 years, leading innovative ventures in healthcare, sustainability, and recycling.  Imagine: a medical doctor with a knack for building successful companies – that’s Bassam!

Then there’s Vicente Oller, a seasoned industrial design engineer who graduated from the esteemed Polytechnic University of Valencia.  He brings a hands-on approach and a creative spark to the table.  Whether it’s tackling intricate mechanical design projects or venturing into the startup world, Vicente’s technical expertise is a cornerstone of Recycap.

Completing the team is Eduardo Perez Martinez, who boasts a degree from Complutense University of Madrid and experience in regulatory affairs and R&D at international companies like Schweppes Suntory and Jacobs Douwe Egberts.  He’s not just a whizz in operations, Eduardo brings a strong sustainability focus, honed through his work in startups like Food Sourcing Specialists.

While their paths may have been different, their passion for innovation and a commitment to a greener future brought them together. The journey, of course, hasn’t been all sunshine and lattes. They’ve faced technical hurdles, market scepticism, and the late nights that come with any startup endeavour. But these challenges have only strengthened their resolve. As Eduardo says, “These difficulties have strengthened us, honing our focus and reinforcing our commitment to making a tangible difference.”

Recycap’s mission is ambitious: to become an everyday part of a sustainable coffee culture. Their key product?  A patented system that separates the coffee grounds from the aluminium capsules, allowing the capsules to be easily recycled in your kerbside recycling. Their first product is market-ready, and they’re excited about the impact they can have. “The potential impact of Recycap excites us most,” they say. “The prospect of contributing to a global shift towards sustainable living, one coffee capsule at a time, motivates us every day.”

What makes Recycap truly special is the bond between the founders. Their chance meeting in Madrid wasn’t just about coffee; it was about shared values and a vision for a better future. This harmony is a core part of the Recycap magic.
